The history of Vilnius starts with the Grand Duke Gediminas who saw in his dream a howling iron wolf and set up a magnificent city with several castles in it. The names of Saint Casimir, Sigismund II Augustus, Barbora Radvilaite and the other noblemen are also embraced by Vilnius history.
Cosy courtyards and narrow old town streets still remember the prosperity of crafts and bustling city life.
The capital of Lithuania is also well known for the abundance of architectural masterpieces - churches, and especially the Cathedral, whose dungeons became the eternal resting place of the nobles, the University, the Town Hall, the Gates of Dawn, the Lithuanian National Philharmonic and the Merchants' House and other objects which make Vilnius famous all over the world.
Since ancient times Vilnius has been a multinational and multicultural city, which suffered fires, plague, famine and other calamities. Still, it rose like a phoenix from the ashes and continues to amaze people with its beauty and greatness.
