The belfry of the Vilnius Cathedral is one of the main symbols of the city, an important part of the Cathedral, Lower and Upper Castles complex. The history of the belfry began in the middle of the 13th century. The defensive tower that stood here in the 16th century. became a bell tower, and at the beginning of the 19th century acquired its current appearance. On the top of the building, the oldest city clock counts the time, and the bell toll calls people to St. Mass. The height of the Cathedral bell tower is 52 meters, and with the cross, it makes 57 meters. Almost the entire first floor of this building has survived to this day. The thickness of the walls of the tower varies from 2.8 to 4 meters. Throughout its history, the bell tower has been on fire several times. The old bells of the Cathedral disappeared, only two have remained to this day to announce the time. The Archbishop of Cologne, Joachim Meisner, presented six newly cast bells to Vilnius Cathedral.
