In the 13th century, the tower was a part of the defensive wall. While walking through the Cathedral Square, it’s possible to notice the brown strip which is the border of the old defensive wall. The Grand Duke Alexander ordered the townspeople to build the Vilnius city wall. They wanted the wall themselves, that's why it was possible to build it so quickly, it took only over 20 years. The wall was supposed to protect against the Tatars, but it was not very functional, as in the middle of the 17th century Vilnius was occupied. The wall was destroyed in most places, and the only gate of Dawn remains to this day.
