For a long time, it was believed that there were only two castles in Vilnius. Still, in recent years, Vilnius researchers, based on the surviving historical sources of chronicles, claim that Vilnius was decorated with three castles. The third one, Crooked Castle, was even older than the other two. The presence of three castles in Vilnius is also indicated in the report of, Grand Commander of the Teutonic Order Konrad Wallenrod, to the Roman ruler about the march to Vilnius at the end of the 14th century.

The Teutonic Order attacked Vilnius Castle. The attack was led by the Marshal of the Order Engelhard Rabė and the Grand Duke Vytautas (Jogaila took over the power). The Livonian Order with 300 knights took part in the march too. During this attack, the wooden Crooked Castle was burned, and the Upper and Lower Castles were not defeated. At the same time, the Papilis settlement was burned.

It has still not been determined exactly where the Crooked Castle stood. Some historians believe that it was located at the top of Tower Hill because many old, interesting caves paved with stones and massive bricks have been discovered at the foot of it. However, the research has revealed that the caves were built no earlier than the 16th century. As a result, the people of Vilnius eventually created a legend that the caves of Tower Hill lead to the Trakai Castle. So, the castle must have stood here in ancient times. But the legends are the legends.
