According to a legend, the name of the hill takes its origin from the pagan sacrificial rites that used to be held here. During the exploration of the hill, a broken spoon was found. The authorities reported in June 1854 that in some parts of the hill the ground had sunken for some unclear reason. The Count Eustachius Tiškevičius started to investigate this event. He wrote the following account: "I have excavated the mountain in seven places. In four places I found vaults, bricks and the brickwork of the vaults indicate a very ancient period, and an iron spoon was also found. According to Count Eustachius Tiškevičius, it was used in pagan rituals of offering sacrifices to the gods for the drawing of blood. This hill, I believe, was used for Lithuanian pagan rites."
