Emperor Charles IV founded the New Town in 1348. It is the newest area in the heart of Prague. The town grew rapidly after a decree was issued to its citizens: anyone who built a house within 18 months would be spared from taxes for 12 years. Merchants and craftsmen lived here. The Horse Market Square serves as the centre. It was Europe's first planned urban region. In 1784, many of the dwellings were dismantled.
The new buildings that were gradually erected gave the city an Art Nouveau look, but also retained the old street plan.
The National Theatre, built in 1883, is very luxurious. Shortly before its opening in 1881, a fire forced the restoration of the building and postponed the opening date.
