Trakai is one of the most visited places in Lithuania. It is a fascinating town with a lake-like landscape and a castle complex that dates to the Middle Ages. It was resurrected from the ruins in the 20th century. Three castles have made Trakai a famous place since ancient times. The origins of history lay in Old Trakai, a small village three kilometres away from the New Trakai. The first castle was built by the Grand Duke Gediminas and is considered the birthplace of Vytautas the Great. The castle on the island of Naujieji Trakai is a masterpiece of the 15th-century Lithuanian Grand Duchy defensive architecture. Together with the Traka Peninsula Castle, they testify attest the economic and military power of the state at that time. Old Trakai was once the largest city in Lithuania.
